Rosh Hashanah – The Jewish New Year 5787/2026/7

by Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin | Sept 10, 2026 | Weekly Message

This coming Friday evening, 11th September heralds in the Jewish New Year, through Shabbat / Saturday and Sunday.

As the first day falls on Shabbat, we do not blow the shofar, usually the Mitzvah of the day, of Rosh Hashanah. However, we do listen to the blowing of the Shofar on the second day, Sunday 13th September. The shofar is blown as part of the Synagogue services in the morning. However, if we have missed this opportunity, we can hear the shofar throughout the whole day of Sunday.

This is where Chabad excels, by trying its best to make sure that as many people as possible can hear the shofar. This maybe in their private home, an aged home / centre, or anyone found, even on the street.

The period before Rosh Hashanah is not only the time of spiritual stock taking, but also for a deeper appreciation of the tremendous potential we have, as human beings, the crown of creation and as Jews, entrusted with the Divine Law of Life.

In these days of reflection, each of us must consider: How far have I advanced in “my efforts” of refining the world, elevating it through “good deeds”? What must I do to resolve to get even further ahead in my personal mission?

May we be blessed to fulfil our mission with G-d’s blessings for a Happy, Healthy, Sweet prosperous New Year.
